The City of La Feria and the Fiesta Planning Committee are hard at work preparing for the 19^th Annual Fiesta de La Feria which is held on the last Saturday in February. This year the date is February 25, 2012, so mark your calendar and plan to attend for a day full of fun for the entire family. There is no admission fee to attend the Fiesta.

This one day event begins at 9:00 a.m. and will end at 10:00 p.m. and features a variety of vendors, from food, arts and crafts, games and entertainment for the entire family. The music will begin at 9:45 a.m. with “Most Wanted” playing rock and roll hits. Also featured are Senior Moments Band, Non Prophet, The Bongodogs, Route 66, Los Angeles del Sur, Jimmy Gonzalez y El Grupo Mazz, and Elida Reyna y Avante. Oscar Munoz will be performing his magic in the Cultural Arts Building at 122 E. Oleander Avenue at 1:00 p.m. and also again at 5:00 p.m. His is a show you don’t want to miss.

If you are a car enthusiast, we have a classic car show where participants compete for first, second, and third place honors and the coveted Mayor’s Choice award. Vote on your favorite and stay for the results announced at 4:00 p.m.

Our children’s area will have its first annual Tiny & Lil’ Mr. & Miss Fiesta de La Feria competition for children ages 4 through 9. The tiny category is for children ages 4 to 6 and the Lil’ category is for children 7-9. Due to the rainy weather, the La Feria 13th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade and Winter Festival have been rescheduled to be held on December 11, 2011. Everything remains the same for the events, same time, same location, same plans. We hope the weather will be better and we can proceed as planned. Happy Holidays!

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

The City Commission of the City of La Feria will hold a public hearing on the City’s Fair Housing Action Statement and Fair Housing Action Plan on Tuesday, December 20, 2011. The Fair Housing Action Statement and Action Plan sets out the steps the City will take to affirmatively further fair housing. “Fair Housing” means there is no discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, family status or national origin in the provision of housing, housing financing, and publicly-funded neighborhood improvements.

The public hearing will be held at the regularly-scheduled City Commission meeting at 6:30 pm in the City Commission Meeting Room, 115 E. Commercial Ave., La Feria.

A copy of the City’s Fair Housing Action Plan is available for review in City Hall and on the City’s website (www.cityoflaferia.com). All interested persons are encouraged to attend the public hearing to testify, or to submit written comments, on the proposed Fair Housing Action Statement and Action Plan:

Lineup for the Christmas Parade Finalized

The La Feria community has finalized the lineup for the 13^th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade. As in the past, the parade route remains the same, Main Street to 9^thStreet going west on 9^th Street across Canal Street into the La Feria High School parking lot, ending behind the school between the school and the stadium. Entries will begin lining up at 4:30 p.m., and the parade will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. After the parade, children riding in floats or participating in walking units may be picked up at the football stadium visitor’s gate. Theatre in the Park

The City of La Feria and La Feria Independent School District are excited to announce a new family event for our community—Theatre in the Park.

The first weekend in December, students in third through twelfth grade will perform Aladdin by Dan Neidermyer on an outdoor stage near Veterans Memorial Park/Sports Complex. Friends, family, and all community members are invited to come, bring a blanket to sit upon and enjoy the magic that is live theatre. “This is meant to be a collaborative endeavor between the city and the school district to enrich our community. The community will be treated to free, family entertainment and students will have the opportunity to act on stage for an audience,” said Mrs. Amstutz, one of the directors of the production.

Auditions for students to participate in the play were held on Tuesday, October 4 at the La Feria High School auditorium. Another audition was held on Sunday, October 9 at 4:00 P.M., also at the La Feria High School. Mrs. Rhonda Amstutz explains, “I am so excited for our younger students to have the opportunity to participate in live theatre. There are ten speaking roles in this show and many opportunities for young actors and actresses to come make the story come alive on stage. We purposely set up two different meeting times in hopes of accommodating everyone who wished to take part.”

City Manager Sunny K. Philip added, “This collaboration between the City and School will provide a venue for students to shine and will also improve the quality of life in our community.”

La Feria 13th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade & Winter Festival

Join us on Main Street for the 13th Annual La Feria Lighted Christmas Parade which will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011. Line up begins at 4:30 P.M. and the parade begins at 5:30 P.M. down Main Street and travels approximately one (1) mile, ending at the La Feria High School parking lot. This year’s theme is “Keep Christ in Christmas” and entries are being accepted at City Hall. The entry fee is $15.00 per registration until November 28, 2011. Late entries will be charged an additional $5.00 and will be accepted until Friday, December 2, 2011. Enter your float or golf cart unit for a chance to win $500.00 for the first place prize, $200.00 for the second place prize, and $125.00 for the third place prize.

After the Parade, join your friends and family at the Winter Festival at the La Feria High School Parking Lot. There will be vendors selling food, arts and crafts, and some carnival games and rides. The Winter Festival will begin at 6:30 P.M. and end at 9:00 P.M.

La Feria Lighting of the Tree 2011

The City of La Feria will kick off its annual Christmas festivities with the “Lighting of the Tree” on Thursday night, November 17, 2011. The public is invited to attend this event which will start promptly at 5:30 P.M. There will be performances by the children from different La Feria schools, the La Feria High School Symphonic Band and the La Feria High School Ballet Folklorico Dancers. Another highlight of the event will be the arrival of Santa Claus with goodies for the kids. The City of La Feria, the La Feria Industrial Development Corporation, the La Feria Economic Development Corporation and the Little Lighthouse Children’s Rehab Center celebrated the Little Lighthouse Rehab Center Grand Opening and ribbon cutting on October 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. The business is located at 313 W. Business 83 in La Feria. Business hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. City officials joined business owners Mr. & Mrs. Rick Perez and employees for the celebration.

City of La Feria Contracts with Cameron County for Collection of Property Taxes

The City of La Feria has contracted with Cameron County to collect La Feria’s property tax payments (ad valorem taxes) beginning with the 2011 Tax Year. Starting October 1, 2011, all tax payments need to be made payable to: Cameron County Tax Assessor/Collector and can be paid locally at 200 Industrial Way, La Feria, Texas 78559, phone number 956-797-3075.

If you prefer to pay by mail, you need to mail your payment to: Cameron County Tax Assessor/Collector, Cameron County Tax Office, P.O. Box 952, Brownsville, TX 78522-0952. You may also pay on line at www.cameroncountytax.org.

This change is made for the convenience of the residents of La Feria, as well as to achieve savings in costs of collection. The City of La Feria appreciates your cooperation in this transition and thanks you for your prompt payment.
