City approves grant to keep more police on patrol

LA FERIA — The police department is going to receive help from Operation Stonegarden to keep more local law enforcement on patrol.

“This means if a major call occurs, instead of having just two officers respond, now there are four or five at the scene,” , La Feria Police Chief Cesar Diaz said.

City officials recently approved the Operation Stonegarden grant application and acceptance of $20,000 from the governor’s office.

The funds will be used to pay for more police patrol in the effort to keep the community safe.

“This grant goes a long way for a small community like ours,” said Jaime Sandoval, La Feria city manager.

Sandoval said historically the city of La Feira has been successful in being awarded the Stonegarden grant over the years.

“What a wonderful win-win for our community and the RGV,” said Eric Hoff, La Feria mayor pro-tem.

The Homeland Security Operation Stonegarden grant supports cooperation and coordination among U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, and local, state and other federal law enforcement agencies.

“Our officers during these grants have increased police presence in our community which has deterred crime through their presence. They also responded to emergency calls throughout our city and play a roll as an additional layer of protection for our patrol officers,” Diaz said.

He said the police department has been very successful during operational hours of the grant in the past.

“Our department has arrested numerous suspects who have violated criminal law, who have pending criminal warrants (local and out of county),” Diaz said about the help of Operation Stonegarden. “Our department has also intercepted a large amount of marijuana on Interstate 2.”
